Our Services. We provide extensive knowledge and experience to help owners understand subsurface soil and groundwater conditions at their project site. Our expertise helps establish the viability of your project, anticipate and resolve construction problems, and generate significant savings on site development, foundation and earth retention related construction costs.

Subsurface InvestigationDetermining the strength and compressibility of the soil on your site is a critical first step in evaluating the feasibility of new construction. Our subsurface evaluations use proven and innovative techniques to systematically explore site conditions. The resulting boring logs and reports satisfy regulatory requirements while providing foundation and structural design recommendations with critical insight into your future construction costs. Our professional engineers help you determine the effort, schedule, and expense involved in moving forward with proposed projects, so you can make informed business decisions.

Shallow and Deep FoundationsWe have extensive experience with multiple types of shallow and deep foundations. Our recommendations and designs are based on the load characteristics of the structure and the properties of the soils and bedrock at the site.
Shallow Foundations Shallow foundations are the most common and economical type of foundation. They typically consist of a footing supported on soils just below the surface. The structural loads are distributed by the footing over an area which is suitably large enough for the underlying soils. The design is based on an allowable bearing pressure along with maximum settlement criteria depending on the type and sensitivity of the structure. Our experience with shallow foundations includes:
Deep Foundations When shallow foundations are not suitable due to excessively large footings or unacceptable settlements, deep foundation are used to extend the foundation support to more suitable soils. Deep foundations are structural elements that are driven or drilled to or into stronger soil layers or rock. Our experience with deep foundations includes:

Earth RetentionOur experts design earth retention systems for various excavations. Earth retention systems can have permanent service lives or may provide temporary shoring during construction activities. The design and construction of earth retention systems considers resisting lateral earth pressures and traffic/construction surcharges, controlling movement, draining potential water pressure, and protecting workers during construction. MP Engineering designs earth retention systems for varied applications including excavation shoring, landslide mitigation and permanent retaining walls. We routinely utilize tiebacks, shoring and bracing, steel and concrete pilings, mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls and underpinning for these applications.

Slope StabilityWe have extensive experience with slope stability analysis, design for safe slopes and excavations, and the design of slope-retaining structures. We are frequently called upon to design earth slopes and to assess the cause of failure for existing slopes. Our professional engineers first execute a subsurface exploration programs to obtain soil and rock samples, then perform a variety of laboratory tests. The resulting site characteristics are interpreted and analyzed using a finite element slope stability software program. MP Engineering provides slope design, stabilization and failure analysis services for the following types of projects:

Ground ImprovementGround improvement uses various innovative techniques to change the basic engineering properties of soils to allow for more efficient and cost-effective design. They are an essential component of many construction projects that involve major underground work, unsuitable soil conditions, and/or unstable existing structures. Selecting the appropriate ground improvement technique for a project requires knowledge, hands-on experience and skills in a variety of ground improvement approaches. Subsurface conditions can vary greatly within a single site and the characteristics of the in-situ soil play a crucial role in determining which ground improvement method to use. Our professional engineers have experience with numerous ground improvement project types including:

Special InspectionsGeotechnical construction observation and special inspections are critical for a successful project and required by most government agencies. Our field engineers monitor workmanship and materials to verify compliance with design plans and specifications. Our observations are documented in field reports which include a narrative description of work accomplished, observations, recommendations made, and our opinion regarding the conformance with project plans and specifications.
